Renowned winemaker Michel Tardieu and French enologist Philippe Cambie created this project that is Bodegas Mas Alta. The bodega is in the village of Vilella Alta in the hot, harsh, mountainous wine region of Priorat. The Mas Alta vineyards are planted at about 1050 feet above sea level, in front of Serra del Montsant (a mountain range that reaches around 3300 feet. Very steep and abrupt, the altitude, inclination, and slopes play a huge influence on the grape’s maturity. And also, the way the sun heats up these unevenly steep vineyards help create a beautifully balanced wine with ripe fruit and softness. The aptly named “Black Slate” is gorgeous and intense. Aged 12 month in French oak, it is a blend of Garnatxa, Carinyena and Cabernet Sauvignon.
