Mondeuse is a grape that is grown only in the cool climate region of eastern France known as the Savoie. (It may also be the same as the Italian Dolomite range specialty grape, Refosco.) What it does in the Savoie, however, is unique. It is related to Syrah, but drinks like a Cru Beaujolais. It’s a simple, delicious wine, especially the offering from wine legend, Eugene Carrel! Full, dark purple, rich and smokey, but with fresh, ripe blueberry notes, alongside savory herbal notes, and slatey minerality. Enjoy this wine at a cool temperature and with all things “picnic”: cured meats, hard, savory cow’s milk cheeses (anything but blue), or hamburgers hot off the grill.
